Singer songwriter Bryan Estepa’s latest record is a melodic and infectious blend of lovesick lo-fi pop and rock.
The Sydney local is releasing his latest offering on vinyl and digital only, bypassing the somewhat forgotten CD format.
Estepa fought hard to have Heart Vs. Mind released on vinyl, crowdfunding the project, and it speaks volumes about his nostalgic approach to music which can be heard throughout the record.
Lead single, ‘Seachange’ will, as the title suggests, transport you to a different place with the sentimental melodist’s storytelling at its best on this laid-back track. Estepa tells a compelling narrative; “Kinda like the feeling of getting lost / The cobblestone streets and ageing walls,” and it’s a wonderful world to get lost in.
‘Seachange’ is followed up with the harder-hitting ‘Them Fighting Words’, a rock song that hooks you in with its catchy chorus where the Sydney songsmith cries, “I’m indecisive / I’m gonna make you mad / I’m gonna serve you up them fighting words.” Throw in some well-placed “Ah ah-ah ah-ah’s” and you’ve got yourself a pretty catchy and convincing tune that goes to show a more antagonistic side to the songster.
‘Overnight’ is an album highlight, a quirky song that surprises with its funky piano and Estepa’s soothing harmonies. ‘She Vs Him’ is a soft and delightful melodic ballad that pulls at the heartstrings, whilst album opener ‘(If You Follow) We Might Just Get Near’ offers a more hopeful perspective.
Here’s hoping there’s more to come from the Sydney songwriter.
