Something For Kate are donning a pair of rosy-tinted shades, and they’ve called upon their fans to help them wax nostalgic.

This year sees the much-loved Melbourne alt-rock trio celebrating 20 years since school mates Paul Dempsey and Clint Hyndman enlisted then-bassist Julian Carroll from a music store advertisement and played their first gig as Fish Of The Day, quickly dropping the moniker in favour of a shopping list note to get ‘something’ for Dempsey’s dog, Kate – and the rest is history.

As part of the band’s 20th birthday celebrations, Something For Kate have launched a fan-driven reunion centred around their debut recording, The Answer To Both Your Questions.

The seven-track EP was originally issued in 1996 on double 7” vinyl in a limited edition run of 500 copies, each with individual handcrafted artwork done by the the band themselves, and sold out instantly. Something For Kate are now aiming to reunite all 500 covers by calling upon the owners of the rare release to submit their photos of the historic covers.

A week on from its launch, and ‘The Answer To Both Your Questions Project’ is already gathering steam, with the band uploading the submitted album art to a special online gallery (which you can view here) that currently looks like a vast advent calendar with many windows onto the uniquely hand-drawn record sleeves yet to be unveiled.

Something For Kate diehards have currently contributed just over 10% of the finished 500-strong gallery, but the über-fan who managed to snap up the coveted first edition of the 500 numbered copies of The Answer To Both Your Questions has already heeded the band’s call. With guitar stickers, glitter glue, a CPR joke, and the band’s signatures – it’s a beauty.

Jumping back from the timewarp and to the current day, following on from the 2012 release of their sixth and latest album Leave Your Soul To Science, Something For Kate are back on a heavy touring schedule.

The band – frontman Paul Dempsey, drummer Clint Hyndman, and long-term bassist Stephanie Ashworth – are set to rock Melbourne Zoo this Friday night as part of the Zoo Twilights series (“finally an all ages show in Melbourne!”), before continuing their run of A Day On The Green dates as opening support to the newly reformed Hunters & Collectors (full dates & details below).

Something For Kate also recorded their own version of Hunters hit ‘When The River Runs Dry’ last year for the Crucible tribute album, while their Like A Version take on Calvin Harris’ Florence Welch-belter ‘Some Sweet Nothing’ landed the band at #68 on the Triple J Hottest 100.
