Want to scale the charts with a bona fide #1 hit? Well, you could do what most singers do – tap a producer with the golden touch – but who’s got the time or millions of dollars for that method?
Why not take the cheap yet still super-effective option: a 10 step crash-course in writing a hit pop song.
Don’t stress, you don’t need talent, all you’ll need is an instrument you can’t possibly master and an internet connection so you can view the two-part program of British clever clogs, Brett Domino.
The first of Domino’s simple instructional videos takes a look at the ingredients behind the all-important instrumental hook, looking to The Hunger Games‘ Jennifer Lawrence and Jason DeRulo for inspiration (wait, come back). Part two focuses on penning a killer chorus – an the less singing ability the better, because “no one wants to hear someone just singing directly into a microphone – that would be boring and weird.”

Ok so both videos are clearly satirical, but despite the UK funnyman’s hilarious approach and music nerd punchlines, his advice to crafting a commercial smash hit is terrifyingly accurate. Right down to the golden rule of “keep it sexy and provocative.”
Plus the two finished products at the end of each video are far better than 90% of what gets played on radio, the second of which takes Australia’s own ‘As Big As The Beatles’ rapper, Iggy Azalea as its key influence.
