Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh has signed on to create and write a television show based on the acid house scene that exploded in the late ’80s.
Ibiza87 is loosely based on the life of Paul Oakenfold, Nicky Holloway and Danny Rampling, three London DJs who spearheaded the rise of EDM three decades ago with their beat-drenched sets in Ibiza. Welsh is teaming with music journalist Dean Cavanagh to pen the series.
“The house music scene and most importantly, the friendships made, the adventures had and crazy tales swapped, have been a pivotal part of our lives over the years,” Welsh says of the series.
“Those beats, pills, and travels, whether to the other side of the world or across the town, shaped a generation, and the opportunity to construct a drama within this backdrop is a dream come true.”
Producer Leo Pearlman said the goal of the series was “to make anyone who lived it look back with misty eyes and anyone who missed it wish they’d been along for the ride.”
Sony Pictures International are attached to the project, so it appears to be a going concern. Read more over at the Hollywood Reporter.
