23 years after they released their last album, highly-influential punk band Jawbreaker look set to finally record some new music, according to a new interview with the band members.

Jawbreaker first formed in New York City back in 1986, releasing four albums between 1990 and 1995. Following the release of their poorly-received (at the time) major label debut, Dear You, the group parted ways, with members working on different projects.

However, in August of last year, Jawbreaker played their first gig in 21 years, as a surprise warm-up show to their much-anticipated reunion performance at Riot Fest in Chicago. Since then, the band have continued to play more shows, with many wondering if this is just a temporary reunion, or if we’re actually witnessing a fully-fledged reformation.

As Brooklyn Vegan reports, a recent interview with the Going Off Track podcast has seen vocalist and guitarist Blake Schwarzenbach confirm that the group are indeed planning to go back into the studio to work on their first new tunes since 1995.

“Our summer is just gonna be trying to write, jam,” Blake Schwarzenbach revealed. “What we really wanna do is just riff out and see what comes. I’m spending the next month writing at home, and then we’re gonna converge in San Francisco and go in a studio and see what happens.”

“I like the more band-like jams that we have [like 1992’s Bivouac] or ‘Jet Black’ or songs like that, that could only be as a unit.”

Schwarzenbach also opened up as to why the group are deciding to make more music, and it tends to indicate that they might be in this reunion thing for the long haul.

“It’s for our own excitement,” Schwarzenbach explains. “We can’t keep playing these same songs. I mean, they’re wonderful for people who have not seen it — we’re lucky there are people that wanna see it — but we need some new songs to make it exciting.”

Jawbreaker have one upcoming show in America in a few months before they presumably head into the studio. While there’s been no talk of shows outside the US, we can only hope that the group decide to change that with a trip to Australia sooner rather than later.
