Guitar hero Joe Satriani has revealed that the “door is always open” when it comes to reuniting his Chickenfoot supergroup.

Back in 2002, guitar legend Joe Satriani found himself performing in a short-lived supergroup named Planet Us alongside members of Van Halen (Sammy Hagar, Michael Anthony) and Journey (Neal Schon, Deen Castronovo).

Despite never releasing a record, the group was somewhat resurrected in 2008 when the former Van Halen members teamed up with Satriani and Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers to form Chickenfoot.

Within just three years, the band had released two records (Chickenfoot, and Chickenfoot III, of course), played live repeatedly, and had set themselves apart as one of the finest supergroups going around.

While rumours of a third album have circulated for close to a decade, the band have barely performed live together either, with conflicting schedules meaning that the quartet have only played four times since 2012.

However, despite a number of factors that might cause fans to think the group is all done and dusted, Joe Satriani has revealed that the future is looking good for Chickenfoot, with a reunion always serving as a possibility.

Speaking on Talkin’ Rock With Meltdown (via Blabbermouth), Joe Satriani touched upon the future of Chickenfoot, noting that Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony’s commitments to The Circle had made things a bit busier than planned.

“Things have been so busy here, because of The Circle, mainly because Sammy wound up hiring my son ZZ to do the longform video for the whole album, The Circle album, and then the subsequent videos for the singles,” Satriani began. “So we’ve been continually tied in to the whole circle — if I can use that word — of that.

“Every year we do the acoustic benefit together here in San Francisco, so, yeah, we’re a very close-knit circle of friends and co-workers, I guess you might say, and we’re always talking about, ‘Maybe we can do this. Maybe we can do that.’ We were pretty close to doing that Huntington Beach thing [Hagar’s ‘High Tide Beach Party & Car Show’], but it turned out my recording schedule created a conflict.”

“If I know Sam, when he says, ‘Look, next year I’m taking off’ — that’s what he says, like, every year — and after about, I’d say about an hour and a half of the year, January 1st, at 1:30 in the morning, he’ll call me up and say, ‘Hey, I’ve got an idea [to] get the band back together.’

“So you never know. But the door is always open, because there’s a true connection between the four of us, and we’d all do it in a second.”

While it definitely looks as though some shifting schedules are the only thing stopping a full-fledged Chickenfoot reunion, fans are definitely hanging out for a brand new record of hard rock anthems from the iconic supergroup.
