Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson has passed away at the age of 48, reports have stated.
As Pitchfork reports, the Golden Globe-winning composer passed away on Friday, February 9th in Berlin, Germany, of reasons that are currently unknown.
Having entered the music scene in the ’90s as guitarist for Icelandic indie-rock bands Olympia, Unun and Ham, Jóhannsson soon turned towards the world of composing. Initially working on smaller, independent features, he quickly rose to prominence for his haunting music that helped to bring a level of emotion and intimacy to his work.
A prolific musician, Jóhannsson also released a vast amount of solo albums in his career. His work on films such as The Theory Of Everything and Sicario saw him receive nominations for the Academy Award for Best Original Score, while he won a Golden Globe for Best Original Score for the former.
More recently, Jóhannsson provided the score for the film Mother!, while his submitted work for Blade Runner 2049 went unused in favour of a score that was more in line with the series’ original music, composed by Vangelis.
As Variety notes, Jóhannsson’s agency, Gorfaine-Schwartz, issued a statement in regards to his death. “We are deeply saddened by the sudden loss of our client and dear friend Jóhann Jóhannsson, whose great talent, humility and kindness enriched our lives immeasurably,” the statement read.
“His music has inspired many new generations of filmmakers and composers. He will be so greatly missed by his Gorfaine/Schwartz family as well as the entire film music community.”
