Britain’s Royal Mint has announced that a public poll to select people to be immortalised on limited edition coins has seen John Lennon take out 92% of the vote, 30 years after his death. The late Beatle surpassed competition from the likes of Jane Austin, Walter Raleigh and John Logie Baird, the inventor of television. The Mint will issue 5,000 limited edition £5 coins featuring Lennon’s image, as well as a one off 24 carat gold version of the coin which will be given to his estate. “It’s entirely fitting that John Lennon has been chosen by the public in what would have been his 70th year,” says Dave Knight, director of commemorative coins at the Royal Mint. “The massive proportion of the vote he received shows clearly just how much his untimely death still resonates with the nation.” Get all the details at www.royalmint.com
