At the beginning of December every year, Spotify Wrapped results rapidly flood social media platforms with users proudly sharing their most listened to songs and albums for the year.

Last year, John Mayer joined the masses in sharing his Wrapped results, and his top artist was none other than John Mayer. His results also showed that he was in the top 0.1% of listeners to John Mayer music for the year.

Now, the pop singer has shared some insight into why he tuned his own music more than any other artists’ on the platform.

“I really was the number one. There are people out there in the world going ‘I’m shocked to find out you were your favorite. But it was just because I wanted to listen to it like everyone else did before they entered the restaurant,” he said during an appearance on Wong Notes podcast.

Mayer went on to explain that he tries to listen to new music, so there aren’t specific musicians (aside from himself) that are on heavy rotation.

“Also, I don’t listen to Spotify a ton. I actually do. But there’s no one artist I listened to enough. So the only like tunneling I did in any artist was me just checking out my record before I knew other people are going to enter the gates of Disneyland on it.”

“And there’s that moment where you go: ‘Alright, listen, you’re great no matter what anyone has to say about you. You’re great. You brought me great joy. I gave you everything I could, I will see you again on the road. Don’t listen to what those bastards have to tell you. Get out there and kill. See you later, bud. And we’ll meet up again on the road when I get to play these songs again,” he concluded.
