Iconic images from the final formal photoshoot of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, ‘The Last Sessions’, are set to be sold as an NFT.

The series, shot by photographer Jesse Frohman months in November 1993, months before Cobain’s death in 1994, left an indelible mark on pop culture. Portraits that captured the essence of Cobain, in all his bravado and vulnerability, cloaked in a fur coat, trapper hat and Jackie O sunglasses.

Cobain showed up to the photoshoot three hours late, requesting a bucket to puke in. Frohman is set to auction over 100 pictures taken on that day.

“The Last Session NFT collection includes images, polaroids, and contact sheets with Frohman’s original markups, some of which have never before been seen,” Frohman wrote. “The landmark NFT release offers those who celebrate Kurt’s legacy a chance to share ownership of a moment that is etched deeply upon the soul of music and culture.”

This marks the first time Frohman has sold his work to collectors. “Every once in a while, a celebrity or someone will contact me directly, but, for the most part, I don’t have that connection,” Frohman told Rolling Stone.

“I think of Kurt especially as an idol, and sort of a hero, for the crypto world. They love to buck the system. To me, that’s what Kurt was. He was very anti-establishment — and he was outspoken about that. I think he would be very interested in the NFT art space.”

The auction starts on May 3rd at 12:00 p.m. ET and will run until May 7th at 6:00 p.m. ET. The starting bid for the one-of-one print is 27.27 ETH — a reference to the singer’s age — roughly AUD $95,058.

There are a number of other, options set to hit auction, including The “Nevermind Editions” — 10 one-of-one, uniquely colourized quadriptychs of Cobain — with bidding starting at 2.7 ETH. And the “In Utero Editions” — 20 five-of-five, uniquely colorized portraits and group shots with Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl — sold at the outright price of 1 ETH.

A portion of proceeds from the sale will be donated to the JED Foundation, a nonprofit focused on suicide prevention and the promotion of mental wellbeing among teenagers.
