Following celebrating 25 years in music, pop sensation Kylie Minogue has announced that she splitting from her manager of as many years, Terry Blamey.
It’s the end of an era for one of the Australian music industry’s most successful partnerships, with the pair originally meeting when ‘our’ Kylie was set to record her 1987 debut single, ‘The Loco-Motion’.
As Noise 11 points out, Minogue had paid tribute to her long-term manager several weeks ago in her acceptance speech for the Peter Grant Award at the Artists & Managers Awards, saying: “Terry thank you so much for everything. For helping a 19-year-old girl take on the world and become a woman and an artist… here’s to the future.”
Despite rumours from British media that Minogue had ‘dismissed’ Blamey because she was retiring from music, The Herald Sun reports that the final parting was amicable, and that the reports of the star retiring from the pop world have been exaggerated.
“Kylie has decided to pull back slightly from the pressures of her career and devote more time to herself and her acting career,” Blamey said. “This is not to say she will be retiring from music, just taking a bit of a break.”“As we reach this fork in the road after a wonderful 25 years working together, we do so amicably…” – Terry Blamey
Meanwhile, the manager himself will “pursue other exciting business opportunities and spend more time with my family. As we reach this fork in the road after a wonderful 25 years working together, we do so amicably, wishing each other nothing but the very best for each other’s continued success.”
Sources say that the decision was first made by Minogue in September, with the two deciding to dissolve their pairing following the New Year’s Eve celebrations in Sydney, where Minogue was acting as creative ambassador for the annual fireworks display.
The split coincides with the singer’s 25th anniversary, for which Blamey has been there since the very beginning, having been her producer for every live show and tour since her very first at Tokyo Dome in 1990. He also helped launch the career of Kylie’s sister Dannii Minogue.
Kylie Minogue is now focussing on developing her acting career, which has been on and off since having starring roles in the mid-90s (including the widely-panned Street Fighter: The Movie in 1995 and 1996’s Bio-Dome). But a more recent return to the silver screen included a smaller part in cult flick, Jack and Diane, and a meatier part in 2012 fantasy drama Holy Motors.
“I had no idea Holy Motors would do this for me,” Minogue told News Ltd in October. “It’s made me a little bit hungry for more …”
