There are precisely shit loads of bands with “Ghost” in their name, generally post-rock, but metal too.

One of them is Deception Of A Ghost, who from their Facebook “about” page could be a bunch of hippies. Angry hippies. They want you to believe in and do what you want and not what anyone else tells you to do, including them (yes that old paradox), except they use a lot more words to say it.

Apart from online philosophising, they have a picture of Katy Perry about to perform oral stimulation on an elephant’s trunk (not a euphemism) which leads you to their cover of her song “Firework”.

Life Right Now is their second album and despite starting with synth strings, glitchy pops and squeaks, the intro soon gives way to some by-the-numbers metalcore. Lots of angry vocals which reach about eight on the hardcore growl scale.

They do actually change tone during songs. Not a melody by any stretch, but it does make a change from pure monotone.

Behind this llies bags of gang shouts which, giving the depth that harmonies provide, alleviate any fear of nearing Beach Boys territory. There are also both clean vocals and shouty vocals,s so it’s the singing that creates the interest out of this formula.

The drumming gets fast and is nice and deep with little clicking and the cymbals are low in hiss and high in smash.

Then there’s the fast chugging riffs and some good melodies from guitar back in the mix, and bass that strings a simple line further away in the aural distance.

Heavy enough to satisfy that need but not so draining as most other hardcore styles, this will guarantee an instant moshpit at any decent gathering of angry boys.
