US rapper Lil Wayne has been forced to cut his performance at the 2018 A3C festival short following fears over a shooting in the crowd.

At the end of last month, Lil Wayne released his long-awaited album, Tha Carter V, which has since gone on to debut at #1 in the US following the second-largest streaming week for an album ever.

Needless to say, fans have been pretty eager to get out and see one of hip-hop’s most successful artists performing cuts from the record live. Sadly, Weezy’s debut performance of the new album has ended a little sooner than expected.

As Billboard notes, Lil Wayne was performing at the A3C festival in Atlanta, Georgia on Sunday night when the crowd began to disperse suddenly.

Occurring about five songs into Lil Wayne’s set, there was much confusion in regards to what actually caused his fans to flee. While some have claimed that gunshots were heard before the incident, others have claimed that it was the result of a brawl that had broken out.

Organisers of the A3C festival took to Twitter soon after the incident, citing an “altercation” for its cause, but noting that police confirmed that no weapons were involved.

“Sadly, there was an altercation tonight that ended Lil Wayne’s performance,” organisers explained. “We are still collecting information to determine exactly what happened and will provide follow up information as soon as we know more details.”

“Please be assured that the law enforcement officers present have confirmed that there were no weapons involved. This was a very unfortunate way to end what had been an otherwise amazing week of music, friendships, and connections.”

Fans who were in attendance have also taken to social media to share footage of the incident, while others have shared conflicting reports about what actually happened.

Sadly, it’s become an all-too common occurrence for music fans in the US to flee upon hearing the sound of gunshots.

Lil Wayne’s concert comes just a year after the infamous 2017 the shooting at Route 91 Harvest Music Festival in Las Vegas which left 59 people dead (including the perpetrator), and a further 530 injured.

While punk rockers NOFX later copped a bit of heat for making light of the incident, hip-hop icon Eminem also came under fire for incorporating the sounds of gunshots into his set.
