FKA twigs is music’s most fascinating rising star. The UK singer’s sophomore EP, EP2, is still six steps ahead of the pop game and it was released in October last year. Now, with her latest single ‘Two Weeks’, the first taste of her forthcoming debut album which drops in August, the doe-eyed enigma has once again travelled lightyears ahead of her contemporaries with her avant-oddball, hyper-futuristic R&B.
In the stunning video accompaniment directed by Nabil, a giant, statuesque twigs sits atop a Mediterranean throne as the camera slowly pans out (a la Kanye West’s ‘Power’) to reveal her golden palace. Below her are mini twigs disciples, dancing like manic banshees with instinctive twitches set off by the subtle ticks, clicks and machine-like cogs triggering away in Clam Casino’s dense, bass-heavy production.
twigs’ layered, high-pitched vocals are as sensual and strong as ever, punching out precise, monosyllabic verses before they soar into a melody that rides the building momentum of Casino’s synths until the chorus finally erupts into its beautifully cathartic crescendo; “Pull out the inside and gives me two weeks, you won’t recognise her/Mouth open, you’re high”.
Everything about FKA twigs’ mystical aesthetic seems too alien to be real, but she’s here, and she truly is the real thing.
