New Zealand pop purveyor Kimbra might’ve took everyone by surprise with ’90s Music’, the hyper-experimental and subsequently polarising lead single from her upcoming sophomore album The Golden Echo, but the singer’s latest sees her going back to more classical roots, and is bound to be more of a crowd pleaser.
‘Miracle’ has Kimbra channeling her long-held Prince and Michael influences in a slice of seriously groove-laden disco revivalism, then filtering it through a blender of her unique artistry. It’s an all-encompassing joyous celebration, a colourful explosion that once again shows off the 24-year-old’s vast and chameleonic talent.
The new single also features two of Kimbra’s many collaborators featured on The Golden Echo: Daniel Johns and Thundercat, who were two of the names she talked about with Tone Deaf when she gave us an extensive guide to the long list of artists she tapped in for her forthcoming record.
Speaking about the Silverchair frontman Johns, she gushed, “He sings on a few songs actually and to have him involved was really amazing. I don’t know how to explain Dan… he has this beautiful youthful spirit where there’s no boundaries on the way he thinks about anything”.
The Kiwi also had glowing praise for Thundercat, saying, “Once I had him play on one song, I was like ‘man, we need you as a colour on everything!’ [There’s] something about the way he plays: a sense of urgency about everything and kind of otherworldly force.”
