Live, Stone Temple Pilots and Bush are headlining this year’s Under the Southern Stars tour. The three ‘90s alt-rock heavyweights have now announced a Melbourne side show.

Who’s keen for a monster package of nostalgia, eh? Live, Stone Temple Pilots and Bush are banding together for this year’s Under the Southern Stars tour, which event promoter Andrew McManus is calling a “one day type of Coachella experience for that 35-plus marketplace.”

But while major outdoor instalments are locked in for Sydney, Adelaide, Perth and Brisbane, Melbourne is noticeably absent. But breathe easy Victorian nostalgia junkies, for Live, Stone Temple Pilots and Bush have now added an extra show in the comparatively intimate surrounds of Port Melbourne’s Timber Yard. They’ll take over 1500-capacity indoor venue on Wednesday April 8.

Live, Stone Temple Pilots and Bush dominated mid-90s mainstream rock. Live have spent the last 12 months celebrating 25 years of their seminal LP Throwing Copper. You know, the album that brought us ‘Lightning Crashes’ and ‘I Alone’.

Stone Temple Pilots merged the songwriting and production smarts of Robert and Dean DeLeo with the charisma of now-departed singer Scott Weiland. The band weren’t worlds apart from the contemporaneous grunge movement, but also embraced the influence of classic rock and early heavy metal.

Jeff Gutt fronts STP these days – he rose to fame with a version of Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah’ on X Factor USA.

Bush, meanwhile, gave us ‘Glycerine’, which apparently every ‘90s teenager knew how to play on guitar. It comes from their 1994 debut album Sixteen Stone, which also yielded the massively popular ‘Machinehead’.

“I wish, fuck, I was there when I was in my rock’n’roll days. If this lineup was up I would’ve been smashing at the door,” said McManus. “It’s great bands that we know are going to deliver.”

Under the Southern Stars is pitched as a rock’n’roll carnival with village market stalls and carnival rides adjoining the live music. The tour will visit 11 locales around the nation this April, many of which don’t see an awful lot of live music.

This includes Yarrawonga on the south bank of the Murray River and coastal hubs Gosford, Tuncurry, Wollongong, Mornington Peninsula and the Sunshine Coast.

Rose Tattoo and Electric Mary join the headliners for all dates except for the just-announced Melbourne show. Live will open the Melbourne show followed by Stone Temple Pilots, with Bush to bring it home.
