We’ve seen cautionary tales about not pissing off your neighbours before, in the stories of a woman arrested four times within 24 hours for playing AC/DC at deafening volume, and Bristol’s ‘Techno Dave’ carted away for holding late-night raves in his apartment block; but this latest report has a far more fatal and tragic end.
According to News Ltd, a Florida teenager is dead after being shot by a man who asked the 17-year-old victim and his friends to turn down the loud music playing from their car stereo.
Michael Dunn, a 45-year-old businessman, is in custody over the shooting that has left teenager Jordan Russell Davis dead after he was hit by at least two shots fired by Mr. Dunn. The incident took place last Friday evening in Jacksonville, Florida reports the Sherrif’s Department Lieutenant Rob Schoonover.
Lt. Schoonover told press that Davis was sitting in the back seat a parked SUV outside a gas station with three other teens, when Mr. Dunn parked alongside the vehicle and made a comment about the loud music coming from the group’s car.“[The music] was loud… But i mean that’s not a reason for someone to open fire on them and take action. – Lt. Schoonover”
“Jordan and Dunn exchanged words, and Dunn pulled a gun and shot eight or nine times, striking Jordan twice. No one else was hurt,” said Lt. Schoonover. Police are currently investigating how the argument escalated into violence.
“It was loud,” Schoonover remarked about the teens’ music. “They admitted that. But I mean that’s not a reason for someone to open fire on them and take action.” Dunn claims he fired his weapon in self-defense because he felt “threatened,” but police reports conclude that no firearms were found in the victim’s car.
Mr Dunn, whose girlfriend was inside the convenience store when the shooting occurred, fled the scene in his vehicle and returned to his hotel room that he had booked while in town for his son’s wedding – but was later traced with the aid of CCTV footage.
CBS Florida reports that Mr Dunn has made his first appearance in court this week in Brevard County where he pleaded not guilty to the murder of the 17-year-old.
The victim’s father, Ron Davis, told local media that he wants to see justice served , “whether it be through the legal system,” or through God. “God’s going to punish him for that, so me, I don’t want to do anything to him.”
First Coast News reports that Dunn’s attorney, Robin Lemonidis described Dunn’s actions as self-defense. “What we know is that once all the facts come out, that what really happened is known, it will be very clear that Mr. Dunn acted responsibly and as any other firearms owner would have acted under these same circumstances.”
