We already knew Matt Okine was a legend thanks to his speech in favour of gender equality as he collected his ARIA Award for Best Comedy Album, but he’s just taken on the lockout laws, asylum seekers, racism, and the Catholic Church and he’s made it all rhyme.
The triple j Breakfast host was on stage at Sydney’s Giant Dwarf Theatre earlier this week and performed a rap written to the beat of Kanye West’s ‘Heard ‘Em Say’, addressing some of the most pressing issues currently affecting Australian society.
“The government’s just trying to make us safer, but wait, ain’t the church full of systematic rapists?” Okine raps in the clip you can check out below. “So who is supposed to be dangerous? The ones covering up crimes or covering their faces?”
According to The Huffington Post, Okine wrote the song over two afternoons and said the rhymes were inspired by a shared sense of frustration among Australians who want to improve their country but are at a loss about just how to do so.
“I didn’t write it because I have any answers,” he told HuffPo. “I think it’s just that common frustration and that feeling of helplessness that you have when you want to do so much but there’s nothing you can do at the same time.”
