Fans of Tool, Van Halen, and food are in for a treat this week, with Maynard James Keenan appearing alongside Guy Fieri on Sammy Hagar’s Rock & Roll Road Trip.
It feels almost like the setup to a terrible joke, but what do you get when you cross the singer of Tool, the former singer of Van Halen, and a bleach-blonde celebrity chef? Well, you get the upcoming episode of Rock & Roll Road Trip.
Back in April, it was revealed that Tool’s Maynard James Keenan was set to appear on an upcoming episode of Sammy Hagar’s TV show.
The program features Hagar on a road trip (presumably going faster than 55 mph) during which he ends up talking to famed rock musicians, discussing a wide-reaching array of topics along the way
Titled ‘Tool’n Around in Flavortown’, the episode is set to air on July 7th in the US, but ahead of its premiere, a snippet of the show has been uploaded to the web, showing Hagar and Keenan discussing the latter’s interesting vocal style.
Check out Maynard James Keenan and Sammy Hagar’s conversation:
After receiving compliments from Sammy Hagar in regards to how his vocals don’t lie within standard time signatures, Maynard James Keenan explained how a high school experience shaped the way he sings and writes songs.
“I remember running cross-country in high school, and everybody has their own breathing rhythms, right? It’s just supposed to be in-out, right?” Keenan explained. “I was actually running to the steps.”
“So, if you’re going over hills, or down hills, or in chuck-holes, or whatever, my breath would follow those rhythms.”
“[It was] odd time signature stuff,” Keenan explained, noting that he listened to music by AC/DC, Pink Floyd, and even Joni Mitchell during these sessions. “And that was kind of like the running. You’re kind of following some of that.”
“So, just naturally it’s easier for me to write to things that are outside four-four.”
While the upcoming episode of Sammy Hagar’s Rock & Roll Road Trip will air this weekend, next month will see the first new album from Tool in over 13 years.
With a release date set for August 30th, fans are undoubtedly counting down the days on their calendar until we reach an even that many thought may never come.
