Melbourne’s Brunswick Hotel has celebrated its 10th birthday by revealing to punters that its doors will sadly never again be open to the public.

Early last year, Melbourne venue The Brunswick Hotel alerted fans to news that it would be closing after “some genius fresh out of driving school took it upon himself run over the fire hydrant in front of the venue, causing a deluge of water to pour directly into our beloved pub.”

With drastic structural damage being caused by the incident, the Hotel was forced to close its doors while renovations took place, meaning that all staff were out of work for that period.

Despite a fundraising efforts to help the location’s “bar staff, sound engineers, bussies and security guards”, passers-by may have noticed that The Brunswick Hotel appears to be no closer to re-opening.

Now, in a post that has undoubtedly devastated longtime supporters, The Brunswick Hotel has revealed that its doors will remain closed from here on.

“Today marks the 10th birthday of The Brunswick Hotel and while it’s usually a big milestone to celebrate, we’re devastated to confirm that since the famous flooding of March 2018 we will never re-open our doors,” the venue wrote on Facebook.

“Due to the ongoing issues with the landlord and the mental and physical toll it has taken, it truly breaks our heart to say goodbye.

“We’ve been beyond proud and privileged to support Melbourne’s up and coming live music scene for as long and strong as we have.

“To every band, artist, comedian, patron and staff member who has played a small or large role in our history, we THANK YOU. The Brunny would never have been what it was without the community that supports it.”

While this is undoubtedly heartbreaking news for everyone who has ever sunk a brew or watched a band in the confines of The Brunswick Hotel, there is good news, with organisers putting their efforts into a new, extremely close venture.

“We know we’ll never be able to recreate the magic of The Brunny, but the ongoing support from the community over the past year has re-ignited the ‘hospitality fire’ in us and we’ve opened a new venture called The Bergy Seltzer,” the Facebook post explains.

“We’re just down the road at 68 Sydney Rd, Brunswick (2 doors down from the corner of Barkly St). So consider this your official invitation – come see us behind the bar.”

If you’re keen to pay tribute to those involved in one of Melbourne’s best venues, be sure to head over to Sydney Road in Brunswick to check out The Bergy Seltzer, with details available below.
