Despite being the album that saw the band receive their first Grammy, Metallica’s seminal …And Justice For All isn’t just remembered for being the record that solidified the act as leaders and pioneers of modern metal.
With the 30 year anniversary of coming up, the album’s mixer Steve Thompson has gone on the acknowledge the widely criticized bass sound on the album, which is said to be quite inaudible.
As reported by Metal Injection, Thompson recently revealed that the band has no interest in re-mixing the album for a 30th-anniversary re-issue, despite James Hetfield mentioning before that he wasn’t pleased with the way Jason Newsted’s performance sounded on the album.
Revealing what the band has in store for fans, he said that he’d “contributed to the anniversary album,” by sending them “them a bunch of pictures and some outtakes”, however, they have “no desire to re-mix the record. They want to keep it the way it is.”
Thompson did reveal some doubts he had if the band were planning on remastering, saying that he doesn’t “even know if those original multitracks could be saved.”
He also commented on Lars’ drumming abilities, mentioning that there were “5 million edits in them from Lars’ drums alone”, which would make remixing or remastering the album difficult.
