Somewhat inevitably, MGMT’s second album Congratulations has leaked. Although record label Columbia conducted a textbook release strategy by drip feeding information on the album’s release and building the hype, it’s leaked almost three weeks before the official release.
The band wanted to respond by offering it as a free download, but inevitably record execs at their label freaked and allowed a compromise by letting them stream it on their official website, www.whiosmgmt.com.
The band put out a statement saying “Hey everybody, the album leaked, and we wanted you to be able to hear it from us,” said a statement. “We wanted to offer it as a free download but that didn’t make sense to anyone but us.”
