MIA is showing her innate ability to remain in the headlines by getting into a good ‘ol fashioned public catfight with New York Times journalist Lynn Hirschberg. Hirschberg wrote an in depth profile of MIA following her during the making of and lead up to the release of her new album /\/\/\Y/\. It wasn’t exactly a suck job, containing several less than complimentary quotes from MIA’s ex Diplo and “Born Free” director Romain Gavras. MIA also said a few stupid things herself which Hirschberg picked up on.
Well, handbags at 10 paces ladies, because MIA is hopping mad and has hit Twitter to have a go at Hirschberg, saying “CALL ME IF YOU WANNA TALK TO ME ABOUT THE N Y T TRUTH ISSUE, ill b taking calls all day bitches ;)”, . The tweet was accompanied by a phone number, which turned out to be Hirschberg’s voicemail, which is naturally now full.
Taking it to the next step, MIA is threatening to post her own unedited recording of the interview online, while Hirschberg has hit back in the New York Observer saying that it was “infuriating and not surprising…It’s a fairly unethical thing to do, but I don’t think it’s surprising. She’s a provocateur, and provocateurs want to be provocative.” Commenting on the voicemail messages, Hirschberg noted “The messages have mostly been from people trying to hook up with M.I.A.,” If she wants to get together with John at Bard (a US College) next week, I have his number.”
