The line up of parties/ gigs/ shows happening this Queen’s Birthday long weekend is straight up insane. One event to add to your already hectic itinerary is the Around The Way party presented by Fünf Touring and YSTRDAYBONE.
On Saturday June 6th, renowned underground electronic music agencies band together to serve you ‘Around the Way’, their most innovative event yet. It will be a party that melds Fünf’s stellar party hosting credentials with the ingenuity of YSTRDAYBONE.
The line up is stacked to the rafters featuring Scottish techno producer Sei A, who will be making his Melbourne debut, local legends like Andras, Cutting Shapes, Michael Ozone and Sleep D DJs.
What we’re most excited about though is Melbourne duo and Australian wonder children CUT COPY DJs (Dan Whitford and Tim Hoey) featuring on the line up. Coming fresh off a big summer and a batch of new projects to bring you their eclectic mix of disco and house. The pair have been releasing music for more than a decade, but to the delight of punters have recently returned to the fore of Australia’s flourishing scene.
To celebrate, Whitford and Hoey have put together a little teaser of what they’ve been dropping in their sets lately. Check it out below, and don’t miss Around The Way this weekend.
Ara Koufax – ‘Brenda’
“This is a track taken from the Oceans Apart compilation I curated last year. It collected a bunch of w w and unreleased tracks from underground melbourne acts and producers and this is one of songs that has had probably had the biggest life off the back of the compilation. It’s definitely been a bit of a euphoric moment in my sets every time I’ve played it.”
New Jackson – ‘Jam On Summer’
“I’ve played this track out quite a lot over the past couple of years. It’s a real house burner, slowly building, breaking down, then building again. I love how hypnotically repetitive it is, but slowly evolves, like vintage Moodymann.”
Taro Tokugawa – ‘Here My Dear’
“This is from a 10” only release put together by the excellent DJ Samo. I’ve got a real soft spot for old balearic tunes and this is a jam that comes closes to the spirit of some of those old records, but also has the energy to rock a dance floor.”
Hot Chip – ‘Atomic Bomb’ (John Talabot Remix)
“Like a lot of people I’ve been intrigued by the rediscovery of west african synth disco legend, William Onyeabour over the past few years. His story is amazing, but his tunes are even more so. This is a cover of one of his tunes that’s primed for the dance floor, but even the original is quite the jam.”
Statue – ‘Statue Theme’
“This is another jam I’ve been playing out from the Oceans Apart compilation. Statue is the product of the minds of two drummers; Nic Oogjes (NO ZU) and Tom Gould (Worlds End Press), and it’s definitely one of the more left field things that has been making dance floors move.
It’s real workout in percussion of all kinds; from digital blips and toms through to live wood blocks, claps and congas. It’s a most unique sounding record… but it works!”
Round – ‘Glass’
“This is a tune released late last year on John Talabot’s Hivern discs imprint. It sounds pretty heavily influenced by Mr Talabot himself, but it has a pleasing combination of ’90s nostalgia and futuristic house production. I’m a sucker for both these things, so it’s been on high rotation recently.”
Bobby Boomerang – ‘Uncharted Waters’ (To Be Released)
“Bobby Boomerang is tongue in cheek DJ name I made up for myself four years ago to play at the legendary Bamboo Musik party. But strangely it seems to have stuck… so I’ve kept using it every time I play outside of Cut Copy DJ sets.
This is something I’ve been playing in all my sets recently, to road test it more than anything. It’s taken from a 12″ due out in July.”
Percussions – ‘KHLHI’
“Percussions is a pseudonym of Kieran Hebden (more commonly known as Four Tet), and this track has been a mainstay of Cut Copy sets over the last few years.
It’s a really dancefloor-friendly track, but also has surprise moments where it sounds like it’s dropping into an old soul tune, but thankfully it always finds it’s way back to the groove.”
Leon Vynehall – ‘It’s Just’ (House of Dupree)
“I’ve recently come across some of the Leon Vynehall music and have been really impressed. He seems to have a real ear for house music, but with a lot more distinctive personality. This is a favourite from his recent album.”
Jose Manuel – ‘Samsara’
“This in the more left field basket of tracks I’ve been enjoying in sets recently, but it’s definitely one of the more distinctive. This one combines african chants and rhythms with an ear splitting drugged out acid bassline. What more can I say, I love it.”
