Progressive rockers from the heart of Europe, Austria’s very own Mother’s Cake will make their first ever visit to Australia in February 2014. Mother’s Cake will be showcasing tracks from their debut record Creation’s Finest including single ‘Soul Prison’, which features Ikey Owens from The Mars Volta on keyboards.

Taking the European live circuit by storm the band has recently supported the likes of Iggy Pop and the Stooges, Velvet Revolver, Living Colour, LeTigre, Deftones, Omar Rodriguez Band, and more, cleaning up audiences and critics alike. Mother Cake’s music is also featured in director Henning Backhaus’s (a student of Michael Haneke) film Local Heroes, which premiered at 62nd Berlin International Film Festival in 2012.

The trio, consisting of the outstanding individual musicians Yves Krismer, Benedikt Trenkwalder, and Jan Haußels took the time go give us a musical guide to their very illusive, very beautiful home country, with tips on where to shop, what to listen to and where to do it along with some of their favourite Austrian acts.

Shop

Flea Market –  picked by Jan
Nothing better then the excitement browsing through old records on the flea market. Always hoping to come along some legends such as Zappa or King Crimson just to bargain with some ol’ grumpy fellow for some discount on it.

Musikladen Innsbruck – picked by Yves
I usually don’t buy CDs. But when I’m in the mood for it, I visit a little store called “MUSIKLADEN”. It’s a very small shop with nice and friendly staff. You can get a lot of alternative records, you can’t find anywhere else.

Rave-Up Records Vienna – picked by Benedikt
Another small record sales company in Vienna. It has a very well-assorted repertoir and delivers from local newcomer vinyls to the LPs of big alternative acts.

Treibhaus Innsbruck – picked by Jan
Call me homy but I really dig going on a concert and see known faces. Besides, you’ll get the best whiskey in town and they never bother to surprise you with some new and crazy music as well. Could be more rocky from time to time, otherwise the perfect combination.

PMK– picked by Yves
It’s a small club under an overpass of a railway. I love the dirty industrial look of the place. They play a lot of good live music and the location is the “alternative” choice in Innsbruck. It’s a known place for Stoner Rock, Prog-Rock, Drum’n’Bass and everything else which is not mainstream.

Arena Wien – picked by Benedikt
The Arena Wien – former slaughterhouse, occupied in the 70ies and still maintained by an autonomous association. Has the most awesome open air stage in all over austria which is why   Iggy and The Stooges, Nine Inch Nails and many more are coming by to play.

See

EBOARDMUSEUM Klagenfurt  – picked by Jan
Imagine one floor filled up with hundreds and hundreds of perfectly restored B3’s, Fender Rhodes and any Synthesizer you can imagine. I myself can’t play one single song, but still there is a certain vibe standing in between all those keys.

Mother’s Cake Rehearsal Room –  picked by Yves
As soon as you enter, it’s dark and cosy. Sit back and relax on a dirty couch ,while you can enjoy a cheap can of beer,… or get up, take a guitar, bass…. and create a monster riff. this is the place, where dirty music dreams come true. What better place than here what better time than now.

GAB Music Factory – picked by Benedikt
The GAB Music Factory is a studio and rehearsal room based in Vienna and is part of our recording company GAB Music. It delivers any services a musician can dream of. So if you’re in town, check it out. At least TWICE!

Austrian Acts To Check Out

Manu Delago – picked by Jan
Played with names such as Björk, Anoushka Shankar, has a Youtube clip with over a million hits, is coming from the “Musical Hot Spot” Innsbruck like us and will tour Australia right after us. I guess one of the biggest names coming from Austria doing creative stuff!

Milk+ – picked by Yves
This is a band which blows my mind. Cleverly written compositions and arrangements, let you float through a universe of beautiful melodys mixed with hard parts and odd measures. It sounds like a fusion of The Mars Volta, Muse, and Arctic Monkeys.

Steaming Satellites – picked by Benedikt
They are one of Austria’s Finest and to me one of the best ever. It’s always astounding to see them live because I can tell that these guys enjoy themselves and there work and love what they are doing. So does the crowd. For two hours you forget everything in the endless spaces of their music.

Austria’s Mother’s Cake are touring the country and are set to play Rock The Bay festival at The Espy, St Kilda on Saturday February 15 alongside Dallas Frasca, The Love Junkies, Like Thieves , Born Lion, Engine (previously Engine Three Seven), Tim McMillan Band, Anna Salen, Helm, Battle Axe Howlers and heaps more.  For full lineup and tickets go to www.rockthebayfestival.com
