Murph from The Wombats has finally announced the details for his new solo project, the artistically-titled Love Fame Tragedy.

Late last month, the Yours & Owls festival revealed a stunning lineup for 2019. However, one name on there would undoubtedly have been a bit of a curious one for some fans.

Dubbed Love Fame Tragedy, the artist was revealed as being the new solo project from Matthew Murphy of The Wombats. A solo project that’s been hinted at ever since 2018, we’ve now received a bit more info about the new venture.

Announcing his debut release today, Love Fame Tragedy is set to release the I Don’t Want To Play The Victim, But I’m Really Good At It EP on September 13th, with an Aussie tour to follow soon after.

Describing the project as being “somewhere between Gorillaz and a solo project,” Murph revealed to NME that Love Fame Tragedy began in late 2016 when he found himself writing songs that didn’t meet The Wombats’ sound.

“Every person in a band wants to do this or have a go at it, so this is my time,” Murph explained. “I wanted to wait for the right time to come around and it felt like everything was good with the band and this was the time to try something new.

“There’s no issues in the band, but we’ve been in a band for fifteen years, living in the same tourbus with one another and it’s not like the Gallagher brothers but there are politics when making an album when you’ve been doing it for so long and with the current music climate no-one cares about politics and I just wanna have a new outlet where it’s snappy and quick and fast, not overthinking it.

“Write a song, ‘is it good?’ ‘yup’, ‘okay, let’s record it, make it sound really good, okay it’s out in the public, where’s the next song?’ Rather than over-analysing a snare pattern.”

Of course, the Love Fame Tragedy project still features an array of special guests, including Joey Santiago of the Pixies, Gus Unger-Hamilton of Alt-J, former Soundgarden and Pearl Jam drummer Matt Chamberlain, and model/singer Maddy Jean Waterhouse.

With a date for Yours & Owls already locked in, Love Fame Tragedy is set to play a run of headline shows in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane in the following days, undoubtedly bringing his beloved performance style to hordes of adoring fans.
