How does one keep track of all the music events happening in Melbourne, with both SLAM hosting their national Save Live Australia Music Day and the 24 hour arts and cultural festival White Night scheduled for this weekend?
Luckily for music fans, Music Victoria has launched a new digital app, ‘Melbourne Music City’ guide just in time. Based on the original physical copy of the ‘Melbourne Music City’ guide, the new app provides users with information on music venues, record stores, and gigs.
The app which joins the list of Tone Deaf’s favourite music apps is unique for its sole focus on music entrainment in Melbourne and surrounding Victorian areas. The app can currently be downloaded for iPhone, iPad, Android, and Blackberry devices.
One of the highlights of its features is the extensive list of live music venues in Melbourne with accessible contact details allowing you to call the venue directly from the app. Music lovers situated outside of Melbourne city can also enjoy the app, also accounting for music venue in regional areas of Victoria.
Other features include a map that can track your location and instantly update you with nearby venues, a music festival calendar, as well as a timeline of significant music events in Melbourne for the history buffs out there.
The Victorian State Government have supported the production of the app with Premier Ted Baillieu offering his praise. “Music Victoria’s ‘Melbourne Music City’ is a great guide for those in search of rare vinyl, on the lookout for a venue or upcoming festival, or trying to navigate their way around the vast and rich array of music in Melbourne,” says the Premier and Minister for Arts.“Music Victoria’s Melbourne Music City is a great guide [to navigate] around the vast and rich array of music in Melbourne” – Ted Baillieu.
The hope for the app is that it will attract tourists to Melbourne as the music capital of Australia. The Australian Trade Commission (Austrade) and Sounds Australia will promote the app internationally to provide global exposure to Melbourne’s booming music scene.
Ballieu also spoke of the anticipated tourism from the app, saying “the Victorian State Government is proud to have supported the development of the app, which represents another innovative way of welcoming people to Melbourne and Victoria.
Louise Asher, Minister for Tourism and Major Events and Innovation spoke of being “thrilled’ to provide support of the new app, which she called “the first of its kind profiling Melbourne’s legendary live music scene, as it helps ensure that Victoria remains the most innovative state in terms of tourism marketing and our offering to visitors,” says Asher.
With a huge weekend of music scheduled over the next two days with both SLAM Day hosting over 200 gigs nation-wide, and Melbourne’s White Night music programme this Saturday, Music Victoria’s CEO Patrick Donovan has promoted the app as perfect for these type of events.
”By using the app, you’ll never have to miss a gig or festival again. The app technology allows us to update it with new venues and events,” said Donovan, encouraging music fans and venue owners to “please contact us if you’ve added something to the amazing cultural fabric of Melbourne Music City.”
