A real mixbag today, some loud, some easy going and some of remix vibes. Our feature is the killer new track from new I Oh You signing, Violent Soho, The Medics, Melbourne new kids on the block Lurch and Chief, The Joy Formidable, Gold Fields remix of Hunting Grounds and Timothy Carroll.
Violent Soho – Tinderbox
It’s been two years since Violent Soho dropped their self-titled sophomore album, with their single ‘Jesus Stole My Girlfriend’ capturing the attention of Australia and the United States where it reached #21 on the Alternative Charts. Now two years later, the Brisbane four-piece have signed to super-trendy label I Oh You! and have recorded with producer Lindsay Gravina (The Living End, Magic Dirt). The fruits of their labour is truly a modern grunge classic ‘Tinderbox’. It’s unashamedly heavy, whilst retaining an infectious hook and a call to arms that’s sure to whip their audience into a frenzy when they play it live. Definitely a band to watch.
Lurch and Chief – It’s Easy
With a decidedly 70s sound – a sound that comes both from the musicality of the band and the lead singer Hayden Somerville’s vocal styles- Melbourne band Lurch & Chief definitely have the tricky make/female shared lead down pat. ‘It’s Easy’, their latest single since releasing their debut EP Paranoia earlier in the year, is a mellow, yet rocking number that lends itself well to the local landscape of Melbourne’s music scene. The 6-piece are also launching this single late in the month.
The Medics – Slow Burn
‘Slow Burn’ is the new single from The Medics killer debut album ‘Foundations’. The Medics don’t mess around on this track, skipping an intro and jumping straight into the first verse featuring pounding drums, jangly guitars and heartfelt lyrics. Definitely an album you should purchase and see live on their upcoming ‘Foundations’ album tour this September/October.
The Joy Formidable – Wolfs Law
Is this really The Joy Formidable? At the beginning it’s hard to tell… the stripped back vocals and piano, which could easily be mistaken for a solo singer/song writer. The track still manages to draw you enough as it builds into an epic wall of layered noise; strings and all as well as Ritzy’s vocals sounding more like the The Joy Formidable we all know and love.
Hunting Grounds – Flaws (Gold Fields Remix)
This is the remix that everyone’s going to be talking about. Ballarat babes Hunting Grounds have been having a pretty good run of late with a huge number of their singles being picked up by triple j and devoured by their fans. Thiis remix of ‘Flaws’ has been done by fellow Ballarat natives Gold Fields and is a more up-tempo if moodier version of the band’s song. This is a track that will no doubt get some traction come the warmer months
Timothy Carroll – If I Were You
Brisbane’s best kept secret is gearing up to release his second album in October, but Timothy Carroll has released his first single, If I Were You from upcoming LP and even gave it a recent east coast tour. The sparsely beautiful layering imagines galloping brumbies as Carroll’s affecting vocals prepares us for a very warm summer indeed. Produced by the ever-reclusive Matt Redlich (the genius behind other such Brisbane bands like Ball Park Music, Hungry Kids of Hungary and Emma Louise), Timothy Carroll’s sophomore effort will be one to keep an ear out for.
