Super producer, engineer, and composer Jan Skubisewski aka Way of the Eagle is finally bringing his latest musical creation to life with a series of shows that will see him performing his new songs live for the very first time on Thursday 12 September at Bigsound in Brisbane, Friday 20 September at The Beresford in Sydney on Friday 20th September before finishing off with a bang in his hometown Melbourne with a show on Friday 27 September at Ding Dong Lounge.
To celebrate the upcoming shows we asked Jan to put together a mixtape of his favourite tunes which include some hip hop, pop and electronica and a few tracks that Jan has worked on with local artists Illy and Owl Eyes.
James Blake – To The Last
I often listen to this song when I’m in transit. It seems to capture that cold motionless feeling of sitting on plane or staring out of a train window. There’s a sadness to it but also a deep beauty.
Illy – On and On
Illy’s one of my favourite people. We have been friends for a long time now and always have a ball in the studio. He’s a rapper but essentially a great pop writer and I am proud he is embracing that. We sat on this tune for about a year before we finished it with the help of M Phazes (Good Gracious) and I am really happy people are enjoying it.
Kendrick Lamar – Backstreet Freestyle
Every time I spin this track at a party people go crazy. The beat is infectious and his lyrics are hysterical. I love Kendrick’s ability to combine hedonism with a sense of artistic flare.
Jay Z – Somewhere in America
A lot of people are hating on Jay Z’s new record (Magna Cart Holy Grail) but I love it. Yeah it’s shallow and every song seems to be about being extremely wealthy, but the combination of the beautiful jazz piano and the demented horn riff of this joint just gets me. It’s New York.
Owl Eyes – Nightswim
Brooke (Adammo aka Owl Eyes) is a total sweet heart. This tune has a timeless feeling and and a sense of innocence. Sometimes the simplest tunes are the best. Go B Rizzle!!!
Haerts – Wings
I was lucky enough to meet these guys recently and heard a lot of their new unreleased material. Her vocals are amazing and their sound is ambitious and epic.
Justice – Genesis
When this record dropped every beat head around the world sighed and said “damn I wish I made that.” Their sophomore release didn’t live up to the hype of the first record but these guys make some serious tunes and I love their musicality and aggression.
