Call it crazy, but we’re convinced one of the biggest joys in life and music is a good remix or cover. Why? Because it means a musician loves a song so much that they’re willing to publicly re-interpret it. To celebrate how special that is we’re taking a look at some of the best new remixes and covers to come out of Australia and beyond. Check out this week’s picks.
Jagwar Ma Cover ‘Losing You By Solange
The Sydney duo hit up BBC’s Live Lounge and along with playing some tunes from their super celebrated debut LP Howlin (read our review here) the boys also treated cameras to a cover of Solange’s monster hit ‘Losing You’. They haven’t altered the tune too much, but still manage to add their own touch to the jam.
Icona Pop Remix Lesley Gore’s ‘It’s My Party’
The Swedish duo behind the disgustingly catchy, and grossly overplayed song ‘I Love It’ have sampled Lesley Gore’s 1963 hit (which was also Quincy Jones’ first big hit as a producer) and with some help from Zebra Katz, seem to be attempting to keep the party going. It’s definitely not as twee as the original, but they retain Gore’s delectably whiney charms.
Roosevelt Remixes Scenic’s ‘Shockwaves’
While the original release from Scenic is a little more spacey, it’s also a lot less dance-able. With an emphasis on disco-infused synths the German producer’s remix takes its cues from the song’s original melody, but leaves the majority of the lyrics behind in favour of funky, Morodor-esque production.
Vance Joy Covers Adele’s ‘Rolling In The Deep’
With the finger-pickin’ goodness he’s known for, the folk-pop heartthrob took on a monster of a cover for Triple J’s Live A Version like Friday. Despite the subdued nature of his vocal delivery, Joy brings all the feelings. Just wait ’til he goes up an octave in the last verse.
Franz Ferdinand Covers Grimes’ ‘Oblivion’
Grimes is a lot of things but she’s never quite struck us as Beatles-esque. Cue Glasgow rockers Franz Ferdinand. The boys covered her hit ‘Oblivion’ live on French radio. The Glasgow fellas are promoting their new record Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action. It’s not their tightest performance, but awesome none the less.
Tame Impala Cover The Flaming Lips’ ‘Are You A Hypnotist?’
The Perth boys are playing a string of dates with The Flaming Lips and have been trying out some covers of the veteran rockers’ jams. As Pitchfork report they played “Silver Trembling Hands” at their show in Dublin last week, then did “Are You a Hypnotist?” at the Rock en Seine festival in Paris two days later. The quality isn’t the best, but here’s hoping they record the covers in the future.
