Bloc Party have been on hiatus for a number of years now, despite providing us with a ‘happy families’ photo of them together at Christmas last year which suggested that they were all still friends and haven’t fallen out. Now, front man Kele Okereke has spoken to reporters over the weekend saying that we may be able to expect some new Bloc Party material in the next few months. Okereke, who is set to head to Australia to play the Splendour In The Grass festival and a number of sideshows, says of his day job band; “There are some plans for new stuff. I’m not sure what I can say… I’d be surprised if there wasn’t some new stuff before the end of the summer.”
This confirms comments made by guitarist Russell Lissack back in April where he stated that the band would be reconvening in the studio this September once all their northern summer festival appearances were complete. Bloc Party haven’t released an album since 2008’s dancey effort Intimacy which certainly didn’t appear to win them any new fans. The underwhelming response to Intimacy and the lack of a record deal with any recording commitments saw the band in no hurry to reconvene and has seen Okereke focus on his solo work as Kele, while Lissack became a member of 90s indie punk Ash for their touring commitments, which are now complete.
