Some of Australia’s best and brightest emerging bands are headed to the UK this month for Brighton’s Great Escape Festival and a large selection of them have been announced to play the biggest showcase of Aussie bands in a special event at London’s Cargo Bar.
Deep Sea Arcade, Cub Scouts, Neighbourhood Youth, Caitlin Park and DUNE are just some of the artists that will be performing as part of the all-day Aussie BBQ on the 12th May at the cutting edge live music venue, joined by sets from Jackie Onassis, Glass Towers, Echo And The Empress, Made In Japan, The Upskirts, Phebe Starr and Mikelangelo & the Black Sea Gentlemen.
Presented by Sounds Australia, the all-Aussie event will be celebrating its fifth annual appearance in London with 12 hours of music and food, bringing together a key selection of Australian bands for the UK to sample.
“These artists have travelled across the globe leaving behind beautiful beaches, amazing weather and a robust and enviable economy to come and play in the UK,” a statement from Sounds Australia and APRA reads. “So you know they are going to be better than just good. This is the show where you’ll discover the next Nick Cave or The Temper Trap or Gotye.”
Closing the 12 hour event is unsigned Sydney hip hop duo, Jack Onassis, named as one of Triple J’s Next Crop 2012, the duo of Kai and Raph’s blend of rhymes, beats, and electronica first came to wider attention with the free online release of their Holiday EP, and set to give British audiences a taste of the homegrown take on the hip hop genre. “You know they are going to be better than just good. This is the show where you’ll discover the next Nick Cave or The Temper Trap or Gotye.” – Sounds Australia.
Playing before them is fellow Sydney-siders, nu-beat combo five-piece Deep Sea Arcade, jetting overseas off the back of their successful debut Outlands, and accompanying Australian tour. Our Sydney reviewer noted that, “as with many of their songs, it brings to mind the neo-psychadelic euphoria of The Stone Roses, though swapping that band’s floating detached vocals for energised, gleeful pop hooks.”
Rounding out the lineup is the award-winning neo-folk musician Caitlin Park, the talented producer/mulit-instrumentalist/future-soulstress DUNE, Brisbane indie pop hopefuls (and Queensland Music Song of the Year recepients) Cub Scouts, and Melbourne quartet Neighbourhood Youth’s brand of indie rock – rich in hooks, honesty, and passionate intensity.
Also playing are ‘Jumanji’ radio hitmakers Glass Towers, South Australian sister outfit Echo And The Empress, raucous quartet The Upskirts, Sydney dream-pop band Made In Japan, rural escapee and smart songbird Phebe Starr. Last but not least, opening the 12 hour All-Aussie BBQ are award winning quintet Mikelangelo & the Black Sea Gentlemen, who bring violin, clarinet, accordion, double-bass, guitar, and Mikelangelo’s rich baritone together in splendid unison.
Now in its fifth year, the London leg of the All-Aussie BBQ was inspired by Sounds Australia’s decade long success story, the South By Southwest All-Aussie BBQ, which for SXSW 2013 earlier this year brought 37 performances – 14 hours of music across three stages – to the infamous Austin, Texas industry gathering.
Many of the acts that featured at the SXSW event have made serious in-roads into international markets, including The Rubens, The Trouble With Templeton, San Cisco (and their international deal with Fat Possum records), Alpine – who are releasing their debut A Is For Alpine onto America with an accompanying tour. But most pointedly, Melbourne singer-songwriter Vance Joy, who recently inked a five-album deal with established American label, Atlantic Records off the strength of his debut EP God Loves You When You’re Dancing, which our Tone Deaf reviewer called “a gorgeous, stripped back collection of organic life experiences.”
Judging by the successes earned from the SXSW 2013 All-Aussie BBQ, the London equivalent is likely to the same of its impressive lineup, nearly all of which will be playing as part of Brighton’s Great Escape industry event just days before. Often hailed as the UK’s answer to SXSW, the festival sees over 16,000 punters attend shows at 30+ venues (read our Festival Guide to the Brighton event here).
