Fresh from the announcement last week that Soundgarden would be returning to Australia to play the 2012 Big Day Out comes more great news from fans that the previously announced 6th studio album from the band will be ready for release mid-2012.

The grunge veterans as-of-yet untitled LP will be their first since Down on the Upside was released in 1996 where it went #1 on the ARIA charts. The band broke up a few years later but reunited in 2010 to play Lollapalooza.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, lead singer Chris Cornell revealed more details about the the LP saying “We have a new album. It’s mostly done, it should be out in spring of 2012. Really it felt like we haven’t really missed a beat…we just had kind of a long extended break…”

He continued “Musically I think the personality of the record — it’s very warm to me and adventurous like all our albums are were. It doesn’t sound like a throwback to any previous period and were definitely approaching songs in different ways than we’ve done…but we always did that from album to album so it feels like the genuine next step to me. It doesn’t feel nostalgic, it feels forward.”
