Lanie Lane has topped the nominations for the APRA Music Awards this year, but while the logical conclusion is that Gotye and his track Somebody That I Used To Know will take home Song Of The Year, a dark horse has entered the race that could cause the biggest upset of the year.
Lanie Lane scored four nominations in total, Song of the Year, Breakthrough Songwriter of the Year, and twice for Blues & Roots Work of the Year, but will face stiff competition for Song Of The Year from Kimbra who has also had a massive year.
Other artists to receive nods include Drapht, Boy & Bear, Matt Corby, Birds Of Tokyo, Busby Marou, and Jebediah.
But there are a few surprises amongst the list of nominations, including The Beards who managed to score a nomination for Song Of The Year for their track ‘You Should Consider Having Sex With A Bearded Man’.
Somebody should find out how many of the members on the nomination panel have beards.
Another mystery is how on earth Short Stack made the cut for Rock Work Of The Year. It must have been a mighty slow year for Australian rock n roll.
In total there are nine categories, some of which will be awarded directly on the ceremony night without nominations including the coveted Songwriter Of The Year which will be decided by the APRA Board of Writer and Publisher Directors.
The Ted Albert Award For Outstanding Services To Australian Music will also have a special presentation on the night, while the Most Performed Australian Work Overseas surely will go to Gotye, finally knocking AC/DC off their perch.
The remaining categories are voted by APRA members, with the winners announced at a ceremony on 28th May at the Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre. Missy Higgins and entertainer Jonathan Biggins have been announced as hosts of the ceremony
“The APRA Song of the Year is voted on by other songwriters, so it’s a great honour to be nominated!” said Gotye today, but if you’d like to wipe that grin off his face then find your closest APRA member the compel them to vote for The Beards.
Because you really should have sex with a bearded man, it’s way better than listening to Gotye.
