It’s a good time to be a Bowie fan, what with the release of his first album in ten years, The Next Day and the exhibition in the UK at the Victoria and Albert Museum showcasing the 66 year old’s musical archive, showing the pop icon is anything but retired.
Now Bowie has gathered an impressive collection of his iconic music videos from over the years on his own personal Vimeo account for fans to enjoy.
What many would call his high point for his long spanning career, the 70s and 80s feature many famous Bowie moments from “Blue Jean”, “Let’s Dance”, “Modern Love” and “Ziggy Stardust“. Fans can indulge in some nostalgia and re-live Bowie’s many distinct looks and sounds, from his pirate look in the 1974 “Rebel Rebel” film clip, the plastic soul period of 74’s “Young Americans“, the classic Berlin era “Heroes” to his eccentric and *ahem* rather chummy 1985 duet with Mick Jagger on “Dancing In The Street“.
Aussie fans can delight in the many Australian scenes being featured in Bowie’s 80s output. In the 1983 “China Girl” film clip, Bowie and and actress Geeling Ng dine in a Sydney Chinatown Restaurant. While in “Let’s Dance”, Bowie jams and performs to a crowd in Carinda, New South Wales.
Just days after dropping the second taste from his first new studio album in ten years with the Tilda Swinton-starring video for ‘The Stars (Are Out Tonight)’, which in followedBowie’s surprise 66th birthday present of releasing lead single ‘Where Are We Now?’ in January, the music icon has another stunning treat for music lovers anticipating his 24th studio album, The Next Day. The latest film clip featured on Bowie’s Vimeo account is “The Stars (Are Out Tonight)”, the second single from his latest album. A short film which features Bowie and British actress, Tilda Swinton playing a couple who are disrupted by a younger couple who stalk them in their neighbourhood. The clip is the second single from The Next Day album, the first release from Bowie since 2003 release Reality.
The Next Day is the artist’s 25th studio album and was released last month, a surprise for fans after much speculation that the music legend had possibly retired. The news of the album came out of the blue, with Bowie’s surprise 66th birthday present being the release of the album’s lead single ‘Where Are We Now?’ in January,
As previously reported, Bowie’s album work was kept a secret for two years as he worked on the project. Even president of Sony Music, Rob Stringer only became aware of the album when invited to the studio in New York.
To coincide with the release of The Next Day, the Victoria and Albert Museum in the UK is currently showcasing an exhibition which is featuring items from Bowie’s nearly 50 year career.
The V&A’s ‘David Bowie Is’ Exhibition has delved deep into the archives to curate an exhaustive look at his career; featuring more than 300 items including original costumes, handwritten lyrics, photography, film, music videos, fashion, set designs, and even some of Bowie’s own instruments.
