With Record Store Day just around the corner, official ambassador Jack White has announced more White Stripes record news in celebration of the duo’s 10th anniversary of their iconic record Elephant.
White’s record label/studio/novelty lounge/retail shop, Third Man Records has already announced plans to reissue the much-loved record on double-vinyl and now fans of the Detroit duo can get a whole lot more vinyl goodies. A 26-track live album, Nine Miles From The White City, recorded at Chicago’s Aragon Ballroom in 2003, will be available for all subscribers of Third Man Records’ The Vault just in time for this year’s Record Store Day on April 20th.
The 79-minute set features plenty of gems from Elephant as well as some tracks from 2001’s White Blood Cells. Also thrown into the mix are covers of Bob Dylan, Robert Johnson, and Captain Beefheart’s ‘Party Of Special Things To Do’. The rare recording will be packaged as a double-LP, one disc issued in red vinyl and the other in white.
Subscribers will also be treated to a 7-inch single of early demos. It will feature ‘I Want To Be The Boy To Warm Your Mother’s Heart’ and ‘Little Acorns’ featuring Jack White solo at the piano.
But that’s not all, a 56-page photo book photographed by David Swanson which documents the pair recording Elephant is also thrown in for good measure. Only three photos from the book of over 50 images have been published previously. The critically acclaimed Elephant celebrates its 10th anniversary this month, having been released on April 1st back in 2003. The standout record catapulted the duo into superstardom by capturing the delicate balance of a popular sound accessible to a wider audience, while still perfecting the mix of garage attack, punk energy, and rock invention they’d mixed on previous albums – as Tone Deaf covered in our retrospective piece.
Record Store Day will be held on April 20th this year and is already shaping up to be a mammoth affair with releases from the likes of David Bowie, Bob Dylan, The Flaming Lips, and Grizzly Bear all on the cards, as well as plenty of Aussie artists.
Tame Impala are releasing a 12-inch expansion of their 2008 self-titled EP, which will feature two new tracks, ‘Forty One Mosquitos Flying In Formation’ and ‘Wander’ on limited edition red vinyl. Cut Copy will be celebrating the occasion with a vinyl release of their debut album, Bright Like Neon Love, whilst Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds will put out a new 7-inch pictured disc in the form of Animal X.
Homegrown Grammy award-winning artist Gotye is also pitching in his support for Record Store Day with a special collaboration with Perfect Tripod – that is the comedic musical trio Tripod with the addition of comedian/actor/musician Eddie Perfect. The eclectic group have recored an a capella cover of cult classic ‘Quasimodos Dream’ by 80s Aussie electro pioneers The Reels, to be released on Record Store Day as part of SLAM’s crowdfunding campaign.
Now in its sixth year, Record Store Day celebrates all things to do with physical music and independent retailers, with a whole bunch of artists issuing special releases on CD, vinyl, and even cassettes, specifically for the event helping to get bodies back into their local record stores. This year’s very qualified ambassador Jack White is passionate about the cause: “We need to re-educate ourselves about human interaction and the difference between downloading a track on a computer and talking to other people in person and getting turned onto music that you can hold in your hands and share with others,” says White.
