What do you get when you put one of the ballsiest, rockiest bands going around in a room with a pair of 12-year-olds? Great an insightful little interview as it turns out.
The old saying goes that rock music is a young person’s game and that old adage is taken to a more youthful extreme in the hands of a pair of Olivia and Connie, two seventh graders who are perhaps the world’s youngest music journos.
The pair recently caught up with Queens Of The Stone Age frontman Joshua Homme and guitarist Dean Fertita, as Consequence Of Sound reports. But rather than take the traditional route of discussing the band’s latest album, Like Clockwork…, or what it might be like working with the record’s all-star list of cameos from Elton John to Jake Shears and Trent Reznor, the kids discuss the tougher topics and hard-hitting questions. Like, what do QOTSA think of the Spice Girls, their favourite Muppets, and Celine Dion.
In fact, the Canadian warbler becomes a running joke during the 8-minute-ish chat, including being the answer for the band’s American Idol ambitions, their favourite colour, and texting. The pre-teen twosome do a damn sight better at getting the mood right with their temperate rock stars than some others we could name (or link to).
The interview is actually the latest in Connie and Olivia’s ongoing interview adventures as part of the website Kids Interview Bands, where the pair have taken their unique approach to over 100 bands that have passed through their native Columbus, Ohio since August 2012.
“Both girls are active in sports and other activities that typical 7th graders enjoy. They aren’t sure if they want to make a living interviewing bands but they are having a lot of fun getting the chance to talk to all the great artists who have agreed to sit down and chat with them,” reads the bio on the pair’s website.
As well as QOTSA, the girls have taken time out with a ream of heavy rock acts, including forthcoming Meredith Music Festival headliners Melvins (marvelling at the grey mop-top of frontman Buzz Osbourne), Soundwave 2014 act Baroness, and The Dillinger Escape Plan.
They’ve also had time with Tegan & Sara, The Polyphonic Spree, Of Monsters And Men, and even some Aussie bands, including San Cisco (who are at least a little closer in age) and psych-rock purveyors (and Flaming Lips pals) Tame Impala, with the “nice and funny” Kevin Parker noting his fandom of the unique music website as well as the idea of ‘lucid dreaming’ to his 12-year-old interviewer; proving it’s not just kids that say the darndest things.
