Oasis are set to make a special announcement later today, which has fuelled fevered speculation that it could ‘definitely, maybe’ be a fabled reunion of the Gallagher brothers.
A video posted on the band’s official social media has, overnight, sparked chatter that the Noel and Liam Gallagher may bury the hatchet and submit to the obvious lucrative benefits of an Oasis union
The video in question contains very little information, simply screening a collection of vintage band photos alongside a bold marquee reading ’26 FEB 9AM’ for an announcement to be made at oasisinet.com, according to NME.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Britpop icon’s debut album Definitely, Maybe, fuelling speculation that the famously bad blood between the Gallagher brothers could be quelled for a series of money-spinning reunion concerts, with industry hearsay stretching as far back as September last year suggesting comeback shows to be hosted at Knebworth Arena, modelled off of Oasis’ hugely successful 1996 shows at the same venue that shifted over 300,000 tickets – the fastest-selling in British history.
While many have their fingers crossed for a reunion, other fans have suggested it’s more likely that the Wednesday morning announcement will relate to a re-issue of Definitely, Maybe, as The Guardian points out, to coincide with the 20th birthday of the landmark album, originally released in August, 1994.
A suggestion that holds water given a recent image posted to Oasis’ social media showing a vinyl copy of the album spinning on a record platter.
The Gallghers’ infamous feuding finally put the nail in the Oasis coffin in 2009, while the siblings have enjoyed growing success by going their separate musical ways – Noel has gone it alone with his High Flying Birds, while Liam took the remaining Oasis ranks to form Beady Eye who were recently Down Under (even playing a few Oasis classics) for the Big Day Out 2013 tour.
Around the same time, reunion rumours were sparked again when former Oasis guitarist Paul ‘Bonhead’ Arthurs told NME he thought Liam Gallagher would ‘jump at the chance‘. “I don’t think it would even take anyone offering him a massive bankroll of money,” said Bonehead, having recently joined Gallagher Jnr for a benefit gig. “He’d do it because that’s what he loves, that’s his passion.” “I don’t think it would even take anyone offering him a massive bankroll of money… He’d do it because that’s what he loves, that’s his passion.”
Gallagher Snr however doesn’t seem so keen. The outspoken Noel has always been quick to mock the band’s legacy (as he did in this glorious 10-minute video montage), and has specifically rubbished rumours that an astronomical sum would be enough for swallow their collective pride.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, the famously outspoken British muso said: “We are split up… You’ve heard that, haven’t you? You must’ve heard… Yeah, so, ergo, band splits up, band is no more. There is no band. So, no, I won’t be getting involved, anyway. If there is a reunion, I won’t be in it.”
It may seem unlikely, but then once upon a time, so did chances that Damon Albarn and Noel Gallagher would ever become best mates, let alone play together.
