The Foo Fighters might have recently returned to the live circuit in anticipation of releasing a brand new studio album, but they’ve still found time to make those ‘Six Degrees of Dave Grohl’ games easier.
The Foos frontman is making a guest appearance on the debut album of The Birds Of Satan, a brand new side-project from fellow Foos drummer Taylor Hawkins, as Rolling Stone reports.
The new group is actually a spin-off of a spin-off, featuring the same lineup as Hawkins’ covers outfit Chevy Metal. Namely guitarist Mick Murphy and bassist Wiley Hodgen, but instead of slamming through renditions of Van Halen, Queen, The Stones and Sabbath, The Birds Of Satan channels those same 70s rock icons to craft the original numbers of their eponymous debut album.
The Birds Of Satan was recorded in under a week and Hawkins roped in Dave Grohl and Foos guitarist Pat Smear into the recording studio, as well as keys player Rami Jaffee (who has played on multiple Foo Fighters albums since 2005) and percussionist Drew Hester.
The extra hands are to help might light work of The Birds Of Satan’s heavy rock and prog-tinged riffage in the vein of power trio Rush (who you might remember were inducted into the Rock Hall Of Fame by Grohl and Hawkins in drag).
As for The Birds Of Satan’s eponymous LP, Rolling Stone describes:
“The seven-song album opens with the 10-minute prog-metal track “The Ballad of the Birds of Satan” before veering into hard rock (“Pieces of the Puzzle”) and power ballads (“Raspberries”). The group, tongue firmly in cheek, described one song, “Wait Til Tomorrow,” as having “the first documented recorded Van Halen style guitar solo of this decade.”
Speaking of rock supergroups, the always prolific Dave Grohl was recently confirmed to be at the centre of a new punk/hardcore all-star project called Teenage Time Killer.
Grohl loaned his personal record studio (and infamous Sound City recording desk) out to Teenage Time Killer for the recording of an album that features a jaw-dropping roster of heavy rock talent. Led by Corrossion of Conformity, along with Grohl, the record will feature members of Lamb Of God, Slipknot, Clutch, Dead Kennedys, QOTSA, Scream, Sunn O))), OFF!, and many more.
As for Grohl’s main musical concern, Foo Fighters confirmed that the follow-up to 2011’s Wasting Light is “fucking ON” in an photo on their Instagram earlier this year, but you’ve gotta wonder – is all this extra-curricular activity delaying the Foo Fighters from delivering their eight studio album?
