Late night American television host Jimmy Kimmel has done it again, with the latest edition of his Lie Witness News segment in which members of the public are trolled with a bunch of fake band names, getting them to show off their knowledge by asking them their opinions on a bunch of acts that were completely fabricated.
First it was flower-toting, indie-loving, artifice-clutching Coachella attendees that were pranked by late night US television host Jimmy Kimmel, then the titular Jimmy Kimmel Live! host turned his attention to hip hop fans at the Rock The Bells festival.
Now the popular television host has turned his attention to the Mecca of hipsters and indie bands, the mammoth SXSW festival held annually in Austin where over 2000 bands vying for the attention of music public and industry alike.
Kimmel is broadcasting his late night show from Austin this week in celebration of SXSW, and couldn’t resist the urge to try out the popular segment which spoofs young hipster culture and their love of obscure bands.
In “Lie Witness News: SXSW Edition” Kimmel had a reporter go out into the crowds at SXSW and ask festival attendees about fake bands.
As Kimmel rightly observes in his introduction of the segment, “people who come to music festivals pride themselves on knowing who the new acts are, even if they don’t actually know who the new acts are.” Certainly, this trend has made it extremely easy for Kimmel’s camera crew to find footage for the funny segment, in which wannabe music fans praise fake bands.
Some of the band names included the very fictional Neil Patrick Harassment, Tanya and the Hardings, DJ Costco, Willie Nelson Mandela, Tonya and the Hardings and their album Sorry About That, Nancy, DJ Cornmeal, I’m Not Down With the Salad, Vegan Bikini, DJ Metamucil, and female DJ Heavy Flow and her album The Toxic Shock Experience
“Do you think Neil Patrick Harassment has a chance of breaking out into the mainstream?” they ask one woman at the festival. “I definitely think so,” she hilariously answers. “They have a pretty good sound, so I like their music a lot. It’s pretty entertaining.”
The producer followed up, “Are they as good as the, sort of, very controversial band What the F–k, Bruce Jenner?”
“They’re right on point with them,” the fan replied, “I think they have a lot of working up to do. I mean, they have a great following so I think they can make it up to that point.”
