Want proof that Gotye is the biggest thing since sliced bread?

Check out some footage of their recent performance at Coachella, a festival in the Californian desert, where it feels like every member of the crowd knows the words to Australia’s biggest single in years, ‘Somebody I Used To Know’.

But it wasn’t what happened during Gotye’s set that was most impressive, rather it was what happened around the festival site when he wasn’t performing.

Reports have circulated around the internet and footage emerged of just about every big name DJ playing the festival slipping the song into their set, including Avicii and David Guetta.

Too soon to say the song was the soundtrack for the weekend’s festivities? You make the call. But it’s just another example of how popular the single and Gotye have become in the United States.

The Billboard Charts will be updated in a few days, and the question currently on everybody’s mind is whether Gotye will finally top the charts, following on from #1’s in 15 other countries.

A number of factors are working in his favour.

Since the last time the charts were updated at the end of last week, where ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ reached #2, the song has been performed on primetime television programs American Idol and Glee.

Gotye and Kimbra also made an appearance over the weekend on the popular comedy skit show Saturday Night Live, where the two performed the duet before Gotye went on to perform another song off Making Mirrors, ‘Eyes Wide Open’.

But it wasn’t the first time the duo, who got together after the previous singer signed on to the project pulled out, have performed on television together.

Their first appearance was on Jimmy Kimmel Live earlier this year, an impressive feat given the performance from studios in Los Angeles occurred in the middle of Kimbra’s busy schedule with the Big Day Out 2012 tour.

The kind of airplay and television coverage the single has been getting over the last week is nothing short of incredible for any artists, but is almost unheard of for an Australian act. The last time an Aussie managed the conquer the US charts was in 1999 with Savage Garden’s ‘I Knew I Loved You’.

But regardless what happens over the weekend on the charts, if the crowd at Coachella is anything to go by – Gotye’s star is only just beginning to shine.
