Following on from announcing the first round of ARIA Award 2013 nominees, the first winners of the coveted awards have been announced as the full list of nominees for the Australian Recording Industry Association’s night of nights has been revealed.
The winners of ARIA’s Fine Arts & Artisan Awards were announced at a special ceremony hosted at the Art Gallery of NSW, where the final list of ARIA Awards 2013 nominations has been unveiled ahead of the 27th Annual ARIA Awards ceremony at The Star Casino on Sunday 1st December.
Following scooping the recent AIR Awards with four big wins, Sydney producer and robot-wrangler Flume leads the nominations pool with eight nods across multiple categories, followed closely behind by Aussie psych-rock majors Tame Impala, with seven nominations, and fellow Perth rockers Birds of Tokyo, who are up for six gongs.
All three acts will be competing for the coveted Album of the Year ARIA, alongside pop star Guy Sebastian and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds’ Push The Sky Away – the band’s first-ever #1 Aussie album and independently released record in their 30 year career.
The nomination is one of six for Nick Cave and his ensemble, while other multiple nominees include electropop duo Empire of the Sun (with five nods), singer-songwriter Vance Joy (three nods), and indie Melbourne duo Big Scary, up for Best Breakthrough Act and for their stunning AMP-nominated second album, Not Art, which competes with Cave in the Best Independent Release category, along with releases from San Cisco, Sheppard, and The Drones.
The ferocious Gareth Liddiard five-piece are also featured among the likes of Tame Impala, Flume, Vance Joy, Matt Corby, Paul Kelly, Karnivool and more in the the four publicly voted ARIA Awards for ’Song Of The Year’, ‘Best International Artist’, ‘Best Australian Live Act’ and ‘Best Video’.
But it is 21-year-old Harley Streten, best known as Flume, who has the best chance of filling his trophy cabinet with his eight ARIA nominations. In fact, Flume has already taken home an ARIA early, winning the Producer Of The Year award at today’s Fine Arts & Artisan ARIA Ceremony for this work on his eponymous debut, one of seven awards that were doled out.
Other winners at today’s ceremony included Empire Of The Sun’s album Ice On The Dune for Best Cover Art and Paul Kelly, who shared the Best Original Soundtrack/Cast/Show Album win with his Conversations With Ghosts collaborators, James Ledger and Genevieve Lacey, and ANAM Musicians.
Meanwhile Virginia Read became the first woman to win Engineer Of the Year, a breakthrough for females in the music industry, while the likes of Missy Higgins, Sarah Blasko, Jessica Mauboy, Abbe May, and Emma Louise shone through with nominations in the particularly male-dominated list of ARIA nominations.
