Following on from honouring Aussie artists in their annual SMAC awards, Sydney’s FBi has once again shown their support for local content by revealing their year-end results of the community radio station’s most played artists and songs for 2013.

The broadcaster’s 2013 Yearbook is broken into two separate Top 100 lists of the last 12 months (in which the station celebrated its decade-long existence with a massive 10th Birthday Bash), and Australian artists dominate in both halves of the Yearbook, as FasterLouder reports.

In fact, Aussie artists take up nine of the station’s Top 10 Most Played Artists rankings (with Philadelphia’s Kurt Vile landing at #9), with Blue Mountains four-piece Cloud Control being the #1 most played artist on FBi for 2013. Fitting given the band walked away with the station’s Record of the Year SMAC award for their second studio album Dream Cave.

Following behind Cloud Control, and rounding out the station’s Top 5 most spun artists, is a ream of Sydney-grown acts; namely raucous rockers Palms (#2), the overseas-invading Jagwar Ma (#3), sonic innovator Kirin J Callinan (#4), and Flume-approved producer Cosmo’s Midnight (#5). Coming in at #6 is Melbourne indie twosome Big Scary, followed in order by indie band Shining Bird, Perth-based producer Ta-Ku, Kurt Vile, and WA’s mighty rock exports, Pond, at #10.

On the international front, electronic acts proved to be the most popular with FBi, with the higher ranking overseas acts being UK duo Disclosure (at #15), Four Tet (#23) and recent Australian visitors Bonobo (at #27) and James Blake (#33). Overall the Top 100 Most Played Artists list breaks down to 31 internationals and 69 Aussie artists.

Meanwhile, the community broadcaster’s Top 100 Most Played Songs list, revealed at the tail-end of 2013, had similarly strong Aussie results (and offers a unique alternative to the forthcoming Triple J Hottest 100 – albeit one that’s decided on by the station’s total spins, not by the votes of its listenership). Just 18 of the Top 100 songs were from international artists, leaving the vast majority of the Most Played list to Down Under domination.

Coming out on top as the Most Played Song of 2013 is The Preatures’ ‘Is This How You Feel?’. No surprise given the Sydney five-piece – who ranked at #13 on the Most Played list, overall – won the ‘Best Song’ category at the FBi SMAC Awards last week. The second biggest song for FBi playlists was another independent release, Popfrenzy signees Unity Floors and their track ‘Nice Fit’, followed by Shining Bird’s ‘Distant Dreaming’.

Bonobo’s ‘Cirrus’, taken from the British producer’s latest album The North Borders, was the fourth most played song of the year, followed by Seekae’s ‘Another’ at #5- the first taste of the Sydney group’s new album – and Palms’ ‘This Last Year’ (at #6). Cloud Control landed in the Top 10 behind Songs (#7 ‘Boy/Girl’) and Touch Sensitive (#8 ‘Pizza Guy’) with their single, ‘Dojo Rising’, while their other Dream Cave cut ‘Scar’, landed at #78 on the Top 100.

Other high-performing Aussie songs included The Drones’ ‘How To See Through Fog’ (#12), Pond’s ‘Giant Tortoise’ (#13), Big Scary’s ‘Luck Now’ (#14), and two Top 20 cuts from Sydney trio (and Solange support act) Movement with ‘Us’ and ‘Feel Real’ sitting shoulder to shoulder at #16 and #17 respectively.
