Oh dear. Sometimes Morrissey just doesn’t know when to shut up. No stranger to getting into a fight with the media, or sparking outrage over perceived racism, the former front man of The Smiths has described the Chinese people as a ‘sub-species’. In an interview with The Guardian, he’s hit out at China over its treatment of animals. The strident vegetarian, who once named a Smiths album Meat Is Murder, said “Did you see the thing on the news about their treatment of animals and animal welfare? Absolutely horrific. You can’t help but feel that the Chinese are a subspecies.” This comment has got the left leaning press in the UK in a tizz, as they generally worship Morrissey as the true epitome of indie, then throw up their hands in horror when he comes out with his provocative views on racism. It’s not the first time Morrissey has made comments which are perceived to be racist, not to mention the furore caused over his song released in the 1990s, Bengali In Platforms, with its line “He only wants to embrace your culture/And to be your friend forever/ … Oh shelve your western plans/ … life is hard enough when you belong here”
