After the blinding success that has been his 2012 so far, including an eight-week reign atop the US Billboard Charts, Gotye has now announced a series of homecoming shows for early December.
Fresh from dominating the international and American markets with the runaway success of “Somebody That I Used To Know”, these shows will mark the first time this year to feature Gotye’s ten-piece live band. They’ll be the first opportunity for local audiences to see him perform since he started topping major music charts around the world at the end of last year.
In the lead-up to this landmark Australian tour, Gotye will play a series of international concerts in some of the world’s most iconic venues: The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Radio City Music Hall in New York City, London’s Hammersmith Apollo and Le Zenith in Paris. The Aussie shows will thus cap a remarkable moment in the career of the acclaimed singer/songwriter also known as Wally De Backer.
The statistics for Gotye’s breakout hit ‘Somebody That I Used To Know (feat Kimbra)’ and album Making Mirrors have been well-publicised: the single has topped the charts in 31 countries, with sales fast approaching 10 million worldwide and album sales approaching 2 million so far.
His omnipresent single was until last week #1 on the US Billboard 100 chart for a staggering eight consecutive weeks. This equals the Bee Gees’ “Stayin’ Alive” which spent eight weeks at the top during their “Saturday Night Fever” heyday and makes it the (equal) second longest run at #1 in the U.S. by any Australian artist ever (behind Olivia Newton-John’s “Physical”, which held for ten weeks in 1982-3).
Closer to home, Gotye’s unique artistry was recognised at last week’s APRA Awards when he was named theAustralian Songwriter of the Year. While his classic release “Like Drawing Blood” and his unforgettable song “Hearts A Mess” first thrust him into the local limelight in 2006, things have obviously gone to a whole new level over the course of this year. It’s therefore only appropriate that he should finish 2012 by bringing it all back home for these select concerts.
Call us rumour-mongers, but December dates could even put him close to a showing at Meredith Festival…
Tickets for Gotye will go on sale to members of his mailing list and Gotye Facebook friends from 2pm Friday, June 22 (local times). Remaining tickets will then go on sale to the general public from 9am on Wednesday June 27 local times.
