New Year’s Eve at the iconic Espy is always a very special celebration and this time around we say g’day to 2013 with two of the biggest and most influential Melbourne bands of modern alternative rock: Spiderbait and Something For Kate.

Hailing from the small southern NSW town of Finley, Janet, Whit and Kram formed Spiderbait after moving to Melbourne. It wasn’t long before they graduated from playing at raucous house parties to the city’s stages. From their first album Shashavaglava to the massive international success of the ‘Black Betty’ single off the platinum selling album Tonight Alright, Spiderbait have had demonstrated a longevity that has been backed up with much lauded reviews after fans were treated to special festival appearances this year to celebrate their 21st anniversary.

Formed in 1994, Something For Kate are a Melbourne three piece band comprised of singer/songwriter/guitarist, Paul Dempsey, bass player, Stephanie Ashworth & drummer, Clint Hyndman. With an impressive discography of six albums and a string of awards, accolades and gold and platinum albums behind them, SFK have just returned with album number six Leave your Soul To Science which this week debuted at # 5 on the ARIA album chart. Something For Kate’s current national tour (their first in over five years) clearly lit a spark of excitement with their fans with every show selling out immediately and second and third nights being added in most cities. Obviously one of the country’s most respected and enduring acts have been sorely missed.

Catch Spiderbait and Something For Kate on Monday 31 December at the Espy. Many more acts to be announced soon! Tickets $60 + bf available via www.espy.com.au and all Oztix outlets.
