You can add another tour to this years hip hop promoting death toll, with Coolio’s tour which was due to kick off tomorrow becoming abruptly “postponed”.
“Unforeseen circumstances” were the original reasoning behind the cancellation, but it has since been revealed that the tour was scuttled due to “visa issues” with the 49-year-old rapper reports FasterLouder.
90s rap superstar Coolio is best known for ‘Gangsta’s Paradise’, which became the official anthem for the blockbuster movie Dangerous Minds. It instantly hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and was the #1 single of 1995 for all genres.
It’s global reach swept the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Austria, Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, Australia, and New Zealand. The album Gangsta’s Paradise was released in 1995 and was certified 2X Platinum by the RIAA.
The grammy award winner rapper is no stranger to tour cancellations either. In 2009 another planned tour was cancelled at the last moment after he was charged with drug possession. The charge came after he was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport after authorities allegedly found cocaine in his luggage.
It’s also just the latest in a string of bad luck plaguing hip hop promoters here in Australia.
Following severe setbacks, including losing headline acts 2 Chainz and Angel Haze and downsizing venues, Live Nation and Niche Productions’ entry into the festival market, the Nas-curated Movement Festival was cancelled entirely.
A few days later, the all-ages urban event Supafest postponed amidst controversial rumours that it had been dumped by venues and couldn’t secure acts for their 2013 lineup, both collapsed events finding an unlikely defendant in the promoter for the embattled Heatwave Festival.
Coolio had been due to play in Hobart, Melbourne, Sydney, and Perth. All tickets are to be fully refunded from the point of purchase.
