The Fleetwood Mac Australian Tour 2013, which was set to start next month, has been cancelled.

The classic rock group were set to kick off their first visit to Australia since 2009’s sold out Unleashed Tour with a packed-out date at the Sydney Entertainment Centre on 10th November, before trekking around the country for a 11-date run, including concerts in Brisbane, Adelaide, the Hunter Valley, Perth, Melbourne, and Geelong, through to December.

Promoters Live Nation Australia confirmed the news of the Australian tour cancellation on Sunday, explaining that the dates were scrapped owing to medical complications with bassist Jon McVie. The Fleetwood Mac co-founder and original member is scheduled to undergo treatment for cancer during the period of the Australian tour.

A statement from the band reads: “We are sorry to not be able to play these Australian and New Zealand dates. We hope our Australian and New Zealand fans as well as Fleetwood Mac fans everywhere will join us in wishing John and his family all the best.” It is not known at this stage what type of cancer McVie has, with the band’s publicist offering no comment on the situation.

Live Nation Australia added their well wishes for McVie, and “a full and speedy recovery, and regret the disappointment that this announcement will cause for the band’s multitude of Australian and New Zealand fans.”

Ticket refunds are available to all ticket holders from point of purchase from today (Monday 28th October). Tickets purchased online or over the phone will be refunded automatically.

McVie, along with his bandmates – Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham, and Mick Fleetwood – had just completed a successful European leg of their current worldwide tour, including a surprise reunion with former singer/keyboardist Christine McVie. The first time the former wife of bassist John McVie (who were married from 1968 until 1977) for the first time since 1998.

The European tour dates follow on from the release of Extended Play, Fleetwood Mac’s first new material in a decade.

Following on from Fleetwood Mac’s 17th studio album, 2003’s Say You Will, the four-track EP contains three new tracks – ‘Sad Angel’, ‘It Takes Time’, and ‘Miss Fantasy’ – credited to guitarist Buckingham, while ‘Without You’ is a revamped version of a track originally belonging to Stevie Nicks and Buckingham’s early 70s catalogue.

The reworked vintage tune has been a regular on the band’s current reunion tour, along with Extended Play opener ‘Sad Angel’, both of which harken back to the band’s 80s output, closer in tone and style to 1982′s Mirage and 1987′s Tango In the Night than the band’s popular Rumours-era output.

Speaking of the iconic 1977 album that made Fleetwood Mac a household name, Rumours celebrated its 35th Anniversary (and 40 million unit selling history), last February, with a lavish re-release in expanded, remastered, and deluxe editions of the Grammy Winning record.
