Melbourne is being gifted with a brand new Aussie music event next January, thanks to the City of Port Phillip and Hammer And Tongs (which features a few folks behind the fine Boogie Festival).
The inaugural Port Royal Street Party, taking place on Saturday 18th January, in Port Melbourne’s Fennell Street will host a whole day’s of live music at a single outdoor stage, with an impressive lineup featuring a band of uber-blokes topping the bill.
Aussie punk legends and Blokes You Can Trust, Cosmic Psychos will be headlining the first-ever Port Royal Street Party, who will be closing the event on the stage set up in front of the Matilda Bay Brewery, fitting given the band’s notorious ability to drink pubs dry.
Joining Cosmic Psychos on the Port Royal stage will be Melbourne punk rock stalwarts, The Meanies, one of Australia’s most enduring underground outfits sure to give a typically blistering live performance, while trucking in from Ocean Grove will be The Murlocs, packing some smart RnB guitar muscle and clanking blues, fronted by the harmonica-playing and singing talents of Ambrose Kenny-Smith (who’s in King Gizzard & The Lizard train-spotters).
Also playing the newly minted street party are moody gallows blues balladeers Harmony, Sydney fuzz rock scallywags Straight Arrows, perverse sludge punk faves Batpiss, the unhinged rock riffs of Bits Of Shit, The Spinning Rooms, and the disco-punk, trash-synth bunch of 20-somethings that is Ausmuteants.
Also on hand will be Yo Grito DJs, the team of King O.P.P (a.k.a. Owen Penglis from Straight Arrows), Silky Doyle (a.k.a. Marty Doyle from Dusty Fingers on FBi), and Flashback (Leroi Waddington from Route 66), who’ll be tearing it up with a weird and wild blend of 60′s Garage, Punk, Psych, Funk, Surf, Rock n Roll, Freakbeat, and Soul in-between bands.
There’s plenty of food and booze to enjoy at the inaugural Port Royal Street Party beside the musical delicacies as well.
“Matilda Bay Brewery will be literally rolling out the kegs and pouring delicious cheap beers…brewed on site!” promise organisers Hammer And Tongs. Meanwhile, the Salford Lads Club will be cooking up tasty treats all day long and hair wranglers Uncle Rocco’s Barber Shop will be chopping away on the day for any unruly gents who’ve let themselves go over the break.
With its impressive all-Aussie lineup and festivities, Port Royal Street Part looks set to be a belter, and tickets for the 18+ only event are just a cheeky $50 from Oztix (available 9am Thrusday 28th November).
