The Big Day Out 2014 set times have been revealed, and not a moment too soon, with the long-running music festival kicking off in less than two weeks.

The full artist timetables for all five capital cities are pretty much the same – starting with the inaugural date on the Gold Coast on Sunday 19th January – but indicate the major shuffles that have occurred to the Big Day Out 2014 lineup since the addition of Beady Eye, Deftones, and The Hives following Blur’s high-profile sudden cancellation.

The removal of the Britpop legends from the Big Day Out 2014 lineup has meant a few changes to the initially promised running order that meant minimal clashes.

While patrons can still catch the day’s biggest bands on the dual alternating Blue and Orange stages – with a run from 4pm from dynamite Swedes through to getting Oasis feels with Beady Eye before festival co-headliners Arcade Fire and a closing two-hour plus set from Pearl Jam – there’s a clash for fans of Snoop Dogg, Major Lazer, and Deftones.

The Red Stage (formerly known as the custom-built ‘Love Stage’ prior to Blur’s departure) is headlined by hip hop legend Snoop, offering an hour-long set prior to a a closing set from Major Lazer, who actually close the Big Day Out in some cities past Pearl Jam’s concert-length set.

Meanwhile, alt-metal legends Deftones compete with Major Lazer and the tail-end of Pearl Jam as the closing act on the JBL Essential Stage, which is the place to be for grunge and hard rock fans, featuring costumed Swede metallers Ghost, desert rock band Vista Chino (nee: Kyuss Lives), Sydney djent-lemen Northlane, grunge era survivors Mudhoney, and Aussie punk ‘Blokes You Can Trust’ Cosmic Psychos.

There are other minimal timetable clashes to be found, but for the most part organisers have ensured a smooth run – organising the seven main stages roughly by genre appeal.

Electronic fans will obviously find plenty to enjoy in the Boiler Room, with sets from the ARIA-dominating Flume and Swedish House Mafia alumni Steve Angello, while the Red Bull No Noise Nightclub offers a raft of DJs and lineups unique to each capital city.

The newly added headspace stage, named in honour of the Australian youth mental health foundation of the same name, will see the four competition winning bands in each state sharing the stage with the likes of Brazilian dance rockers CSS, Aussie hip hop star Kerser, and Japanese psych-fuzz outfit Bo Ningen.

Perth fans will also be pleased to see that the powers that be over at Perth’s Claremont Council, who were furious that the Big Day Out snubbed them in an application to extend to an 11pm curfew, have lost out, with Major Lazer closing the festival at 10.45pm at Claremont Showgrounds after going over the council’s head and directly applying with the WA Department of Environment Regulation.

Along with the Big Day Out 2014 set times, there’s also the maps that detail the full layouts of each leg, so you can inspect the new Gold Coast home at Metricon Stadium or Adelaide’s shift to Bonython Park in full detail.

Interestingly, the maps also seem to be light on details regarding the Big Day Out’s usual extra-musical activities, including the Lilypad arts hub and Chow Town, the fancy food gathering of gastronomic selections that aims that einvented the festival food experience last year with gourmet eats.

Organisers have already confirmed that Chow Town will be returning for Big Day Out 2014, once again led by culinary geniuses Ben & Elvis (of Porteño/Bodega), so expect other fancy festival features to be announced in the next few weeks.

Tickets for the festival are still available in each capital city at the official Big Day Out 2014 website.

There’s also tickets still available for a variety of the Big Day Out 2014 sideshows, including gigs from Arcade Fire, Snoop Dogg’s various shows with Major Lazer, Mac Miller, and Flosstradamus, The Lumineers, Primus, Toro Y Moi & Portugal. The Man, Grouplove & CSS, and The 1975.

Those awaiting the timetables for Big Day Out co-promoter AJ Maddah’s other big festival, Soundwave 2014, will have to just be patient; “What I have is Microsoft Excel, loads of bands, a fucking headache and loads of self hate,” tweeted the outspoken promoter earlier today prior to the Big Day Out 2014 set times dropping.
